‘Retrouvailles’, New Zealand : from Timaru to Omarama

30 January 2017 | By | No Comments

Cyril and Elodie’s bike trip has started in New Zealand on the banks of the Timaru and Omarama lakes.

remorque à vélo

Their first encounters with the people were very pleasant because “the Kiwis are extraordinarily kind, welcoming, easy and patient.” To spend as much time with the New Zealanders as possible Cyril and Elodie have chosen to stay at the locals’ homes thanks to the websites Couchsurfing and Warmshowers. When they can’t find a place to stay they’ll go camping.

For the beginning of the trip the roads are quite easy to cycle, there are lots of cycle paths and the others users are patient and careful.

The first kilometers enabled us to test the material, make some adjustments, recover from the flight and the jetlag.” In 5 days, the couple has cycled for 220km.

The concept of city centre doesn’t really exist. It seems the English tried to establish this way of living but it didn’t work. Usually there is one main street lined with a few shops in the middle of the city, the houses are set around this main street and the farms are at the entrance and exit of the city. You won’t find a central area with restaurants and bars like in Europe !

After stopping at Fairlie, Cyril and Elodie took the road to the lakes through the State Highway 8. Steep roads and a strong wind forced them to reduce their speed until Lake Tepako 710m high.

voyage à vélo

Then the pair reached one of the most famous bike trails in New Zealand : the ‘Alps 2 Oceans Bike Trail’ to reach lake Pukaki, the biggest lake in New Zealand with Mount Cook (3754m high) in the background.

On the way to Omarama. To reach this village we were quite lucky : wind in our backs, a slight slope, we can cycle up to 30km/h easily, it lifts our spirits up.

After 480km and a hill of 1750m, the pair is quite enthusiast about the KIT L80 bike trailer :

All our stuff is easily carried in our AEVON bike trailer which follows us everywhere ! It’s really handy and completely waterproof ! Our total load was quite heavy and when we’re going downhill it doesn’t waver (up until 71km/h). The fact the trailer is suspended (with a shock absorber) is very handy as you can climb any type of obstacle without any damage to the rim or tyre. We are happy with our choice and recommend it to other bikpackers like us.
The photovoltaic panel was a brilliant idea, our GPS and phones’ batteries are always full. That’s exactly what we needed !

We will follow Cyril and Elodie along their trip, don’t hesitate to read their blog.

Alain takes us on his Tour de France with his bike and Aevon trailer.

Third day : St Valéry/Honfleur

bike trip
The day is particularly difficult with a climb of 1018meters and 9hours cycling ending with the Pont de Normandie. I cycle for 119km along the coast from St Valéry to Fécamp, then Etretat and finally Honfleur. The weather is good.

Fourth day : Port en Bessin/Barfleur

Departure with a little rain that turns into a real shower in the afternoon !
Today I cycle through Villerville, Trouville, Deauville, Villers sur mer and its beautiful and hard hill on the thighs. Then I cycle along the landing beaches between St Aubin sur Mer and Port en Bessin.
I spend 6h30 on the bike for 96km with a peak of 56km/h with the Aevon trailer behind me.

Fifth day

It’s a very bad weather. My bike tips over with the trailer and my luggage falls off. The very strong wind follows me all day for 100km.
I cycle along the landing beaches and all these villages full of History. At 5pm I’m glad to reach my hotel room.
Tomorrow I change direction and shouldn’t have the same wind but … you never know !

Mike & Steph’s trip

13 June 2016 | By | No Comments

Michaël and Stéphanie decided to visit 8 Asian countries with their tandem and a bike trailer.

Originally, their project was to travel through New-Zealand. Then to join South America. But some logistical obstacles led the two friends to the Asian countries : ‘Our ambition was financially and logistically very difficult to carry out.’ Their trip will take them from Indonesia to Nepal, through Malaysia, Thailand and Laos. Their trip will begin by plane in Indonesia but they will come back to France on their tandem through Scandinavian and European countries.

Stéphanie was not a fan of cycling, but she found the ‘idea pleasant and brave’. And you might say she’s brave as Stéphanie began cycling actively 2 years ago. For this trip they chose a MTB tandem very strong and easy to handle and and a bike trailer. Originally, their project was to travel through New-Zealand. Then to join South America. ‘We chose an Aevon trailer so we could carry our food, our sleeping stuff and everything needed to survive in the open air.
A few words on our best ally : the STD 100 is essential in a bike trip. It is easy to handleroomy and light and the hitch system on the seat post is very practical.

We also bought the necessary equipment : windbreakers, sleeping bags, a tent, shoes, rain pants, clothes for the cold, etc…’

On their blog, you can follow Mickaël and Stéphanie while they go on training on anticipation of their departure in September. They will share with us the most important moments of their trip.

First day : Thourotte/Blangy sur Bresle

trip with a bike trailer
Departure at 7.40am in the cold with a temperature of 0°C. But in the afternoon it went up to 20°C. This route was very pleasant and took me along the Oise : Gournay, Maignelay, Montigny, Breteuil.
I stopped for lunch at the 90th kilometer (at Poix-de-Picardie) and crossed a department to reach my destination around 4.30pm.
Today my ascent represented 1103 meters, with an average speed of 15,2km/h and I spent 8.16am on the bike.

Second day : Blangy-Sur-Bresle/St Valery en Caux

travelling with a bike
Departure around 8.00am in the direction of the Le Tréport along the Bresle.
Pleasant day but with a lot of steep hills (Dieppe, Hautot and many others.)
I cycled for 99km, with an average speed of 13,4km/h and spent 868m climbing.
I saw the bautiful villas of Mers and Dieppe, named the city of the four harbours.
Everything was fine with beautiful weather. Even the wind blew in the right way.
